Cleveland v Buckinghamshire
Strong Finish gives Cleveland the edge over Bucks
Cleveland hopes of successive promotion campaigns remain intact thanks to another strong home performance from the North East outfit
All negative thoughts were out of the window with the sole objective to enjoy the weekend and keep up the promotion chase
Who better to open the weekend than the experienced Babs Evans(16.23) and she delivered like she has so many times to get Cleveland off and running with a Lady of the Match performance. Tracy Marran (12.39) was hoping to make it two wins on the spin but fell short before Bucks took the lead as Irene Simpson (13.32) lost 3 nil. Leanne Witten (13.36) has shown real promise this season and pleased the home crowd with a whitewash victory. Molly Pywell (11.37) was unlucky to lose a match that went the full five legs. Margie Shannon (13.54) was superb in victory and punched the air with delight to share the women match 3-3
The Men’s B were up against a strong Bucks side who themselves had a few late changes with Kenny Dobson returning for the unavailable Barry Hunter.
Tony Liddell (24.54) put together his strongest performance in a Cleveland shirt for a while to settle the nerves of the team. Barry Davies (23.94) was up against an inspired player making his debut and unfortunately lost the match 1-3. Unbeaten Peter Frewer (22.10) made it 6 wins out of 6 to make a statement to the selectors for his place in the A team. Dave Hunter (26.37) fresh from his Whale Hill Open win continued his quick-fire rise to the top with a sublime Man of the Match performance that augurs well for the Hartlepool’s career with Cleveland County.
Kenny Dobson (20.56) struggled more than anyone with the bitter cold venue and lost to former Stockton Player Mick Carrick. Cleveland needed a captains performance but unfortunately Mick Horney (20.75) did not meet his high expectation, however, he brushed it off and cheered on every player that weekend.
Buckinghamshire were now on a real high winning the last 3 matches but it was Cleveland who then came out on top of three 5 leg matches as Paul Jarred (20.94), Jimmy Dunlop (22.01) and returning Andy Huskinson (21.28) all demonstrated real bottle to put Cleveland 9-6 up.
That ended up being Cleveland’s final point of the day as Anth Lupton (24.51) lost an absolute cracker before Gary Stephens (27.01) put together a big average but it wasn’t enough for victory before Scott Chatterton failed to register his first win for the county for a disappointing end to the day
HALF TIME CLEVELAND 9 BUCKS 9
There was a late change to the Women’s squad as Marie Bulmer was too ill to play and more disappointingly withdrew from the squad alongside Ken Dobson for the rest of the season. I know I speak on behalf of the squad to wish her a speedy recovery and hope to see them both back in the squad where they belong.
Gail Carhart (17.15) seemed to struggle with the early start for a bad start to the day. Shirley Witten (19.32) was up against a new real talent of English darts Fallon Sherrock but Witten dismissed the big reputation and duly won the match to put Cleveland back in the game.
Pat J Smith (18.14) played well in defeat before Claire Stainsby (21.47) put together another big average and a Lady of the Match award and sets her up nicely for her attack on the Scottish Open this weekend
Marlene Huby (15.75) and Margie Shannon(16.71) both put in very spirited performances against very good players but both fell just short but the experience gained in playing in the A squad can only benefit them in the future.
Cleveland really needed a big win from the talented Men’s A Team.
Allan Edwards (23.10) continued this amazing unbeaten run once again never getting out of 3rd gear, but its win that matter. Richie Corner (23.12) levelled the overall score with an effortless performance.
The Gentleman of Cleveland darts Big Daddy Terry Agar (22.63) has found the transition to the A squad difficult but he will be winning games very soon. Dutch Open 2012 Runner Up Dave Prins (25.05) also struggled with the cold venue but still whitewashed his opponent. Tony Eccles (22.17) won his match 3-1 but was never really himself on the oche.
Dennis Coleman (27.33) once again kept up his win one lose one pattern in a superb performance but must now work on his consistency because when he is good he is very good.
Collin Foxton (25.16) played in the most difficult of circumstances and any person that questions his dedication to Cleveland need a long hard look at themselves it was just a shame that ‘Foxy’ couldn’t keep up the fight back from 2 nil down to level the match to end up losing a match that went the distance.
Glenn Brooksbank (26.84) was as solid as a rock as he showed all the flair that has saw him play on the biggest of stage in his career and Cleveland are lucky to have a player with his pedigree playing great darts. Mick Evans (22.77) was as ‘sick as a parrot’ to lose a match he was leading 2 nil.
Glen Durrant (29.49) was once again pushed all the way in another 5 leg match that required a 13 dart last leg to win. Peter Maw (16.61) was not at the races but we all know he was a blip and he will be back to very best next match.
With the score at 18-17 and the possibility of a win plus bonus points on offer Mr Cleveland Simon Craven stepped onto the oche and delivered another excellent performance like he has in his excess of 200 appearances for his county to give Cleveland a big win

just ahead of us in second place.
Gwynedd v Cleveland
Cleveland Crash to Heavy Defeat
The lead up to the match was difficult with 6 amendments to the squad. Players of the highest calibre unable to attend the match
On the day Cleveland had disagreements ranging from Team Selection to the timing of a Team Meeting plus an issue with a ‘long throw’ on the stage board.
Cleveland had pride itself on team camaraderie but there was a feeling of a low morale and this showed in some of the performances
Irene Simpson (12.11) opened up proceedings with a loss that went the full five legs. Leanne Witten (12.19) was hoping to follow up her great win last match but came up short. Molly Pywell (13.39) did stop the rot to put Cleveland’s first marker on the board. Karen Jones (12.82) and Liz Knowles (12.75) both give their very best but both fell short. It was great to see Tracey Marran (15.49) put in a Lady of the Match performance and back in the tungsten groove.
Hopes were still high as Cleveland Men’s B got to the oche and expectation was high as Ken Dobson (22.77) who has been in superb form really struggled with the throw in a disappointing defeat. Anth Lupton (22.85) was in another 5 leg tussle but on this occasion the welsh player got the better to leave Cleveland struggling at 6-2 down.
Mac Chahal (23.12) never lets his county down and motored to a quick fire whitewash, before Jimmy Dunlop (18.19) brought Cleveland back in the running. Steve Scaife (17.97) was making a welcome return to the squad but never really got into gear to lose 3 nil. Hopes were still high as Barry Davies (18.21) strode to the oche but for whatever reason he is not producing his Super League/Competition darts that we all know he can do. Tony Liddell (21.49) looked very solid in a great win for the Billingham player. Captain Mick Hornsey (24.44) put in a good performance against an impressive opponent but lost 3 nil. The highlight of the day was Paul Jarred (26.84) who put in a superb Man of the Match performance, he looked very much a top player on the stage.
Gary Stephens (24.78) was unlucky to come up against a player who secured the highest Gwynedd average of the weekend. Cleveland did end the day on a high as Davy Hunter (22.67) who has become an excellent acquisition to the squad won his second match on the spin before the unbeaten Peter Frewer (22.43) made it 5 wins out of 5 this term.
HALF TIME Gwynedd 10 Cleveland 8
The Sunday had a strange feel to it with 3 B Team players stepping up to the A Squad and questions still being answered over the team selection and with the Middlesbrough Football match on in another room the issue of playing as a team raised its head again and it seemed a long time ago that the players were getting in fancy dress and cheering on all players creating a special atmosphere.
What happened over the next two hours shocked all Cleveland players as the Ladies A team lost 6 nil. The ladies have been fantastic the past few years and can give any team a game. Shirley Witten (17.98) who has been a real stalwart and many times has given Cleveland an early lead seemed to also struggle with the throw before Pat J Smith (13.76) lost one of those games that can define a weekend missing 10 darts at a double to win the match. Marlene Huby (13.21) was making a first appearance in the A team but came up against a very capable player. Gail Carhart (20.93) was involved in a cracker and also had a dart at a double in a match that was appreciated by both counties. Marie Bulmer (15.66) was disappointed in herself after a superb run in the Super League of late. Claire Stainsby (20.74) lost her unbeaten record to welsh international Gaynor Williams.
Gwynedd 16 Cleveland 8
The men were looking for a couple of quick wins but the opposite happened as Dennis Coleman (21.72) kept up his win one lose one record. Peter Frewer (24.62) making his A Team debut looked the part and put in a big effort before losing 3-1. Tony Eccles (28.90) looked superb in his Man of the Match performance.
Allan Edwards (22.43) kept up this unbeaten run with a scrappy win and he attempts to go two seasons unbeaten. Mac Chahal (20.57) playing his second game of the weekend does not look the same player as when he plays on the Saturday. Paul Jarred (19.30) found the going tough as he struggled to make the transition the A squad. Glen Durrant (28.30) who last tasted defeat at County in 2005 lost a 5 leg match to his Man of the Match opponent in what was a disappointing end to the week of gaining his England selection.
Mick Evans (22.60) was desperate to end his losing streak and gave everything he had but it wasn’t enough. It was a case of damage limitation now as the hosts had ran away with the weekend. County Manager Collin Foxton (24.93) sank the winning double with his opponent sat on a double in what was a great finish. Peter Maw (26.11) shouted with delight to pump up the deflated Cleveland squad with a barn storming win for the popular Billingham player. Terry Agar (21.85) was presented with a cake for his 50th birthday and also drew the plum draw to play World Ranked Welsh captain Martin Philips who just had too much for Terry. Once again Cleveland ended the weekend with a win as Rich Corner (24.55) effortlessly produced the goods for the fluent Thirsk Super League Player.
All in all it was a very disappointing weekend for the Cleveland Squad. It was a bit of a wakeup call for the squad who have had nothing but success the past few years. Bizarrely Wiltshire also took a real beating and the league table means Cleveland only drop 1 place are still only 2 points from the top. Cleveland have the chance to right the wrongs in only two week’s time with a home match against Buckinghamshire.
I would like to say to the Cleveland players that we can still do this if we believe in each other and remind ourselves of the Home game to Shropshire last year when we created a superb atmosphere and produced Premiership quality darts. We win as a team and we lose as a team and sometimes you have to take a step backwards to move forwards.
FINAL SCORE GWYNEDD 26 CLEVELAND 13
Cleveland v Sussex
Cleveland continue winning ways
Cleveland County put together another masterful performance as this amazing streak of form continues. A couple of seasons back Cleveland languished at the bottom of Division 4 without any real team spirit and direction. However, the current committee has worked hard on building up a real team ethic and this was shown in abundance as the Cleveland Ladies dressed up in fancy dress to be the Men’s walk on girls, it created an excellent atmosphere with Sussex joining in the fun with their own interpretation of the walk on and fun was had by all.
On the Saturday the ladies were looking for another quick-fire start, but for the first time in many months we found ourselves 2 games down as Karen Jones (14.55) and Tracy Marran (16.26) both lost with Marran losing by the odd leg. A couple of seasons back this may have lead to a downfall of the whole weekend, but the women showed real grit and this was highlighted with Liz Knowles (13.30) who showed real nerve to win a last leg shootout. Leanne Witten (11.90) won her first game of the season to leave the scores level. Up stepped arguably the player of the season so far as Marlene Huby (17.48) put together another Lady of the Match performance. The consistent Molly Pywell (13.63) was unlucky in defeat to leave the scores level at 3 games each.
The Cleveland Men’s B team are sitting pretty in the league and once again put together a virtuoso performance that was encapsulated by the debutant Dave Hunter (23.12) who has shown real promise in the Super League to prove that the current system works. The experienced Jimmy Dunlop(17.71) was devastated in his performance but the whole of the Cleveland squad are right behind the popular player from Billingham. The match continued to ebb and flow and this was shown in the match involving Barry Davies(23.73) who secured a 3rd leg 12 dart win only to then lose the match 3-2.
Tony Liddell (21.28) showed all the fight that Cleveland are all about as he roared with delight at sinking the winning double. Paul Jarred (21.79) looked very comfortable on the oche to beat a well respected Sussex player. Peter Frewer (21.78) stepped up to the oche next and concerns were raised with a poor first leg, however, Peter hit a nervy double but then grew in stature to cruise through the next two legs and a possible A team spot beckons. Gary Hayes (26.25) was involved in the game of the day and the crowd showed their appreciation as he sank the winning double for a man of the match performance. Anth Lupton (24.07) who has been in great form of late missed out in another exciting match to leave the Men’s score at 5 games to 3.
Mick Hornsey (22.60) never lets his county down and put together another win to leave Cleveland only requiring one more point for a first day lead. This was confirmed as Gary Stephens (23.86) whitewashed his opponent. Surely Gary will be back into the A team where he belongs very soon. Terry Agar (21.17) continued the winning streak with another hard fought win. Cleveland were expectant as Barry Hunter (16.30) stepped onto the oche, but for the second match in a row Hunter did not perform anywhere close to what his potential is to leave the Men’s match at 8-4
HALF TIME CLEVELAND 11 SUSSEX 7
The Golden Eagle was packed for the Sunday with a late change for the County men with Gary Hayes replacing the injured Michael Pearce.
Babs Evans (16.86) missed a few doubles in defeat to give Sussex hope of reducing the overnight arrears. Cleveland needed to respond and thankfully Claire Stainsby (20.54) stepped up to the oche to provide another Lady of the Match performance. She looks a real class above this division. Marie Bulmer (15.21) was looking to build on her success from the last match but came up against a top class lady of the match Sussex opponent. Pat J Smith (16.60) was very unlucky in defeat with darts at a double to win the game. Cleveland looked in trouble as Gail Carhart (18.22) went 2 nil down but the real turning point of the day happened as Carhart fought back for a brilliant victory that seemed to lift the home crowd. Cleveland are lucky to have Shirley Witten (16.16) who once again romped home to victory to leave the ladies match at 3-3
Cleveland lead 14-10 and looked to get a few wins on the board to settle any nerves in the home camp.
The first match had everything as Glen Durrant (30.92) went one nil down to a very impressive opponent who pushed the divisional average leader to the limit and only a 119 finish from Durrant gave him victory and the man of the match award with the Sussex star sat on a double. Mick Evans (25.83) raced into a 2 nil lead before the Sussex player showed real determination to win the match, much to the disappointment of the home crowd. Up stepped Glenn Brooksbank (26.84) who showed his class in an excellent high scoring performance to put the home team back on track.
Rich Corner (27.83) when in full flow is a joy to watch and he showed all his skills with a fluent victory. Collin Foxton (25.47) just can’t buy a win at County at the moment and just fell short in another exciting duel. With Tony Eccles (26.60) and Dave Prins (23.65) up next the situation looked rosy for the home team, but never count your chickens as both players lost much to the amazement of the both the home and away support to leave the match 4-3 to the visitors
Allan Edwards (24.94) last lost for Cleveland on April 25th 2010 and duly won his 14th match on the spin to give Cleveland 18 points and one away from victory and the bonus points.
It was fitting that Gary Hayes (21.88) was that player to cement a superb weekend for the Billingham player who has only been playing the game a short period. Simon Craven (19.84) grabbed his 100th win for Cleveland County in what is a fantastic achievement. Dennis Coleman (26.84) put on his best performance in a Cleveland shirt for a few seasons to beat the number 1 player from Sussex to give Cleveland a very good result.
The only tiny blot of the weekend was the loss of Peter Maw(22.54) who was millimetres away from the winning double in the decider.
This left Cleveland Men with a hard-fought 7-5 victory and leave the County joint top with old adversaries Wiltshire
Cleveland prepare themselves for another long away trip in January to Gwynedd
FINAL SCORE CLEVELAND 24 SUSSEX 15
Norfolk v Cleveland
Cleveland Top the League
Cleveland County has so much to celebrate of late as this fantastic revival in the camp continued with an outstanding away win against a strong Norfolk team
After another long journey Cleveland players were psyched up to get off to another flyer and the Cleveland women did not disappoint as player of the weekend Liz Knowles (14.10) secured a Lady of the Match performance and the added bonus of representing her county in the A side the following day. Liz has come on leaps and bounds since her introduction to the squad. The ever reliable Molly Pywell (13.01) and Karen Jones (12.83) gave the team a tremendous start. Leanne Witten (16.92) put together a strong average but was unfortunate to come across a very talented Norfolk player. Margie Shannon (12.91) was an unlucky loser before the only disappointment as Marlene Huby (14.31) who has been outstanding of late lost by that dreaded 3-2 score.
On paper the Cleveland Men's B looked very strong and once again they delivered as Gary Hayes (24.35) got the team off to a great start that included a 146 finish. Tony Liddell (21.09) lost on his return to the side before Kenny Dobson (26.86) lost with an average that would win most matches.
Cleveland showed real fight and this was demonstrated as Jimmy Dunlop (23.14) set off at a frantic pace before winning by the odd leg, Peter Frewer (25.01) secured another win. Peter is now an integral part of the squad. Terry Agar (27.39) returned back to his best to compliment a big average he had a t Super league the week prior to give Cleveland a lead of 4-2
Barry Hunter (20.66) was not himself in his 3-1 defeat though Anth Lupton (21.42) won a tight game in a last leg battle. Paul Jarred (22.57) was a comfortable winner as he played with real freedom. Peter Maw (27.83) was impressive in his man of the match win to secure his return to the A team the next day. Captain marvel Mick Horney (23.48) put in a very solid performance to put Cleveland in real control of the match. The last match of the day provided all the thrills of what is synonymous of County Darts as Gary Stephens (24.20) just failed to win the match in a real classic
HALF TIME NORFOLK 7 CLEVELAND 11
Cleveland were in the Rileys venue nice and early on the Sunday morning as Cleveland women faced a daunting Norfolk ladies team. However, Shirley Witten (22.61) showed what Cleveland is all about at the moment with a stunning Lady of the Match performance that really set up the day. Liz Knowles (13.96) had the backing of her brilliant teammates but it was a step to far and the star from yesterday found the going tough, but will benefit immensely from the experience. Tracy Marran (14.73) showed glimpses of the form from last year in her defeat.
Cleveland needed a win to get back on track and it was Claire Stainsby (19.79) who did exactly that with another comprehensive victory. Babs Evans (16.01) just didn’t have enough in her armoury to beat Dawn Standley. Marie Bulmer (15.34) got the biggest cheer of the day as she secured a draw against the strong Norfolk outfit.
The Cleveland Men's A team were looking for another quick-fire start and got exactly that as Tony Eccles (25.91) whitewashed his opponent before Simon Craven (30.47) put on a display that typified the weekend, coming back from 2 nil down and securing another 30+ average. Ecstasy soon turned to disappointment as Rich Corner (26.46) lost a 2 nil lead much to the delight of the home crowd. It was a setback as Mick Evans (27.51) also put in a very solid performance but losing to the inspired Norfolk player.
Players from both counties were on the edge of their seats as Glenn Brooksbank (22.09) won a match that swung one way to another on many occasions to give the men a 3-2 lead and more importantly an overall lead of 17-12.
Norfolk were not going to give up without a fight as James Hubbard (27.83) the World Youth finalist stepped onto the oche against Mak Chahal (22.33) who was making a return to the A squad after a few years of real consistency in the B team. It was a step too far for Chahal as Hubbard set off at a frightening pace only to miss a few doubles but enough to secure the point.
Allan Edwards (22.43) unbeaten run continues as he never got out of second gear to win the match at a canter. Dennis Coleman (22.68) was left frustrated as doubles cost him another victory. BICC 2010/11 Number 1 Glen Durrant (32.52) won a real tough match but came through strong to finish the match on the bull and gain the accolade of Man of the Match.
Cleveland celebrated as they now had won the match and gained those valuable bonus points.
Collin Foxton (24.00) had a frustrating afternoon that was compounded as he lost his darts at the venue to cap off a bad day for the popular manager. Cleveland finished as they started as the returning Peter Maw (23.81) and Dave Prins (27.83) dominated their respective games with only a poor last leg from Prins stopping him getting the man of the match award.
FINAL SCORE NORFOLK 15 CLEVELAND 24
And as they say in Norfolk the scoreline was …… ‘REAL BOOTIFUL ……
!!’
Cleveland v Gloucestershire
Big Win for Cleveland
Last year’s division 4 champions were back in the North East to take on a powerful looking Cleveland side who are now playing in a squad that is pulling together.
The Women’s B have had a great start to the season and set the foundations for a great win as the experienced Molly Pywell (14.58) opened up with a nail biting 3-2 win. Karen Jones (10.18) seemed to struggle with the throw but was delighted to hit that final double for another last leg win. Margie Shannon (12.37) just failed to give Cleveland the perfect start, losing by the odd leg. Marlene Huby (14.82) secured the accolade of Lady of the Match with a fine win much to the delight of her county teammates. Liz Knowles (11.93) lost to leave the match poised as Pat J Smith (14.40) hit an excellent finish to give Cleveland Ladies a 4-2 win.
Peter Frewer was first up for Cleveland and didn’t disappoint with a clinical win. Scott Chatterton (18.30) was simply not himself on the stage as he struggled with the throw. Paul Jarred (20.90) lost to a very impressive Gloucester player but Man of the Match Barry Davies (25.91) was a very comfortable winner to keep the two point gap intact.
Peter Maw (21.67) added real strength to the B team to put Cleveland in a commanding position. Gloucestershire showed their real quality to take the next four games as Andy Huskinson (23.10) lost 3-0. The next game was a real cracker as Gary Hayes (26.17) threw everything at his man of the match opponent but to no avail. Kenny Dobson (22.37) was another player who struggled with the throw for a disappointing loss for the home team. The experienced Ste Scaife (22.45) was also a victim to the last leg shootout as Gloucestershire threatened to take real control.
Cleveland demonstrated real fighting quality as the last three players all won by a 3 nil scoreline as Gary Stephens (22.77) brought the match level. What happened next will go down in Cleveland history as Terry Agar (20.88) checked out on 170 for the match, but with the dart ‘wobbling’ in the bull Terry ran to the board to collect the dart only for the stage set up to collapse around him. All this was evidenced in the live stream on the internet much to the hilarity of the crowd as Terry ‘Samson’ Agar tried in vain to hold onto the stage. The demolition man saw the funny side afterwards.
Mac Chahal (25.05) was simply superb as he ignored the joviality in the room to produce a professional performance to end the day on a real high for Cleveland
HALF TIME – CLEVELAND 10 GLOUCESTERSHIRE 8
It was back to business on the Sunday as the experienced Babs Evans (17.87) played a great game only to be pipped at the post after busting 114 for the match. The room was bouncing as Claire Stainsby (24.24) demonstrated all her skills on the oche with an effortless lady of the match performance. As so often Shirley Witten (17.05) did not let her county down and only missed doubles affected another big average, but the win was all that mattered.
Player of 2010/11 Tracey Marran (13.70) has struggled to match the achievements of last season and unfortunately she failed to meet her own high expectations in a 3-1 defeat. Pat A Smith (17.08) was fantastic in a match that included a maximum 180 and a brilliant finish to win the match 3-2. Marie Bulmer (16.84) was the final player and she is finally looking like the A team player we always knew, she showed real self belief and did not allow nerves to get the better for a great 3-1 win and cement a great win for the ladies 4-2
The Men’s A team looked very strong on paper and it proved to be exactly that against a very good Gloucestershire men’s team as ‘Mr Cleveland’ Simon Craven (25.68) opened up the proceedings with a 3-1 win. Dave Prins (32.23) has been a wonderful addition to the squad and he proved that with a man of the match performance that included a 161 and 146 finish for a stunning average. Dennis Coleman (22.69) gave Cleveland the dream start as he got through a nervy first two legs to run out a clear winner.
Next on the oche was Glen Durrant (30.06) who produced another 30+ average with the highlight being deadly finishing. Tony Eccles (25.53) raised the expectation in the crowd once again and not only did he secure another win for Cleveland but guaranteed the bonus points for the weekend win.
Michael Pearce (24.88) was involved in a ding dong battle of which he came out on top to Cleveland Men a 6 nil lead. Richie Corner (25.52) was up against the away teams number 1 player but that didn’t bother him and he nailed the winning double to keep this amazing winning streak going. The match of the day included the two players who won 9 out of 9 last year as Allan Edwards (26.73) won a classic against Mark Chiswell to increase the men’s lead to 8 nil.
With the unenvied responsibility of going up next Collin Foxton (25.71) started slowly but moved through the gears nicely only to lose the first point for the Cleveland men. Mick Hornsey (23.98) was up next and failed to stop the mini revival for the away team as a poor last leg hurt the ‘Monkey Anger’.
The ever so dependable Mick Evans (23.48) eradicated the memory of the last match to do what he does best and whitewash his opponent for a great win
Gloucestershire finished on a real high as Andrew Morse beat the impressive Glenn Brooksbank (29.98) whose average would win the majority of games.
The conclusion was a brilliant win for Cleveland against a team that will still challenge for the Division 3 title and it’s onwards and upwards for the North East outfit who prepare for another gruelling away game this time to Norfolk
FULL TIME CLEVELAND 26 GLOUCESTERSHIRE 13
Welsh Stalemate for Cleveland
Cleveland set off for their long haul trip to Pembrokeshire after their successful promotion season to the 3rd division
The fixtures have been unkind to Cleveland. It would be difficult for Michael Palin to circumnavigate the fixtures that Cleveland face this year in 80 days
Respect has to go the Ladies B as some of the players had been sat on the bus for 11 hours and then expected to play darts. However, the ladies did the county proud as Pat J Smith (13.93) won for the first score on the board this year quickly followed by Liz Knowles (10.94) who had a promising season last year. Marlene Huby (13.97) just missed out on the perfect start losing by the odd leg. Karen Jones (LOM 14.30) put the away side in firm control with a terrific performance. Margie Shannon (10.85) and Molly Pywell (13.69) both lost to leave the match poised at 3-3
Scott Chatterton (20.03) made a losing debut but a successful county career beckons for the popular Redcar player. Gary Stephens (25.91) showed his class and it won’t take the big man long to be back in the A team where he belongs. Gary Hayes (22.43) is part of the up and coming players and it was great to see him get off the mark this year. Steve Scaife (21.39) and Jimmy Dunlop (21.26) are two dependable players for Cleveland but it just wasn’t their day. Terry Agar (22.36) has been an excellent acquisition to the squad and he levelled the match up with a strong performance.
Andy Huskinson (20.96) often saves his best matches for county but on this occasion he wasn’t at the races. Mak Chahal (MOM 27.21) was inspired as he knocks on the door for a return to the A squad to give the team a real lift. Peter Frewer (23.12) followed up the good feel factor in the room for a comfortable win. Barry Davies (26.19) can count himself unlucky to lose with such a good average to leave the match 8 each
Paul Jarred (21.47) secured at least a draw for the Cleveland squad with a 3 nil win and it needed an experienced player to see out the win and up stepped Kenny Dobson (21.11) who had now been in the venue 10 hours win even when not at his best. It was great to have ‘Dobo’ back in he squad.
HALF TIME PEMBROKESHIRE 8 CLEVELAND 10
Cleveland had their trials and tribulations just getting to the venue for the Sunday but that’s another story. When the darts actually started Pat A Smith (14.22) pulled out the plum tie of Julie Gore. Pat did win a leg but Gore checked out on 146 for an outstanding 24.10 average. Marie Bulmer (17.45) was up next was involved in a ding dong battle. A checkout of 93 was not enough for Marie as she lost the decider to leave the match all square. Worse was to come for Cleveland as player of the year Tracy Marran (14.17) and the experienced Babs Evans (16.55) both lost by 3-0 scorelines. Hope was still in the Cleveland camp as Shirley Witten (LOM 18.51) and Claire Stainsby (17.09) brought the game back to Cleveland to leave the match at 12 each
Mick Pearce (23.59) was up first for Cleveland a man with all the talent in the world but just lacks real belief in himself and this was evident as he lost a nervy last leg. Cleveland needs Mick in the team firing on all cylinders. County Manager Collin Foxton (27.21) was in outstanding form to win 3-1. The game ebbed and flowed as Glenn Brooksbank (25.64) lost to BDO ranked Jamie Lewis. Tony Eccles (MOM 29.47) made a welcome return to the county scene to add real depth to an already strong squad. His experience could be invaluable to the team this season.
Again, Pembrokeshire come back as Simon Craven (25.86) had double trouble in his defeat. BICC average winner last year Glen Durrant (27.83) was on for another big average only to miss double after double in the last leg but more importantly put Cleveland back in front. Cleveland entered a honey moon period as Allan Edwards (25.91) also on a high after his unbeaten 9 out of 9 season last year continued his great form to put Cleveland further in front and after a nervy first leg Lakeside bound Dave Prins (26.87) put Cleveland 3 ahead with 3 games to go.
Unfortunately, that was the last point as Dennis Coleman (23.79) came up against Pembrokeshire’s man of the match who seemed to hit his final double with Coleman sat pretty. Mick Evans (22.56) the ever dependable Hartlepool player just couldn’t find that big gear to lose 3-1. County Captain Mick Hornsey (22.71) had once again rallied the troops all weekend and it would have been the ideal conclusion for the ‘Monkey Anger’ to win the final point but he was unlucky to lose to a pumped up Welshman to leave the match all square.
